What is the spot price of gold?
The spot price is what one troy ounce of pure gold trades for right now on the wholesale market. It changes all day, every trading day. It’s the starting point for every coin, bar and jewelry price.
What’s a troy ounce?
Precious metals are weighed in troy ounces. One troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than a regular kitchen ounce (28.35 grams).
Why does a gold coin cost more than the spot price?
Dealers add a premium over spot to cover minting, shipping and their margin. On popular 1 oz coins it’s usually a few percent; on small pieces and collector coins it can be much higher. See fair premiums.
What do 24k, 18k and 14k mean?
Karats measure purity out of 24. 24k is pure gold, 18k is 75% gold, 14k is about 58.3% and 10k is about 41.7%. The table above shows what each is worth per gram today.
