Best Gold IRA Under $25,000 (2026): Low Minimums and Real Costs
By Mark Sandulli · Founder & editor · Updated October 21, 2026 · Not financial advice
Short answer: four of the seven companies we rank accept less than $25,000: Birch Gold Group ($5,000), American Hartford Gold and Lear Capital ($10,000), and Noble Gold Investments ($20,000). Our pick is Birch Gold Group (8.2). But Gold IRA fees are flat, so they take a big bite out of small accounts: $235 a year is 4.7% of $5,000. Below about $20,000, check whether an IRA makes sense at all.
Who you can open with under $25,000
| Company | Our score | Minimum | First-year fees | Yearly after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Birch Gold Group | 8.2 | $5,000 | $315 | $235 |
| Noble Gold Investments | 7.8 | $20,000 | $365 | $285 |
| American Hartford Gold | 5.9 | $10,000 | About $455 (reported) | Not published |
| Lear Capital | 4.6 | $10,000 | $315 | $235 |
Augusta Precious Metals and Patriot Gold Group require $50,000, and Goldco $25,000.
What fees cost on a small account
| Account size | $235 yearly fee as a share |
|---|---|
| $5,000 | 4.7% |
| $10,000 | 2.35% |
| $15,000 | 1.6% |
| $20,000 | 1.2% |
At $5,000, gold has to rise almost 5% every year just to cover the fees, before the markup on the metal.
Other options to consider
- Buy coins outright if the money isn’t in a retirement account. There are no yearly custodian or storage fees, though you’ll need safe storage. Moving retirement money out of an IRA to do this can mean taxes and penalties.
- Wait and add to it. Fees matter less once the account reaches $20,000 or more.
- Ask a licensed advisor about other ways to hold gold inside a regular IRA.
Which one should you choose?
Birch Gold Group has the lowest minimum, published fees, all four metals and a solid complaint record. Noble Gold is a good choice from $20,000 and has one of the lowest complaint rates we track. Lear Capital publishes low fees but loses points for a 2023 regulatory settlement and the highest complaint rate we track. American Hartford Gold doesn’t post its fees online.
